Memorandum

To: Files, Southeast Utah Group

From: Walter D. Dabney, Superintendent, Southeast Utah Group

Subject: Compendium Addendum

As a part of a general prohibition on non-equine pack stock, the Superintendent previously enacted a prohibition on entry of llamas into Canyonlands National Park (hereinafter "Park"). This decision was based, in part, on information he received suggesting that Johne's Disease may be a threat to the desert bighorn sheep population in the Park. Subsequent information from the scientific community, however, establishes that while the threat of the transmission of Johne's Disease from llamas to bighorn sheep is theoretically possible, it is negligible, and transmission of this disease from llamas to bighorn sheep has not been demonstrated. Nevertheless, the prohibition on the entry of llamas and all other non-equine pack stock into Canyonlands National Park will be continued in accordance with the general prohibition of non-equine pack animals from the Park.
